Health Benefits and Requirements for Ukrainian Newcomers

Uniting for Ukraine Health Information

Newcomers who have arrived through the Uniting for Ukraine program have access to certain health benefits:

  • Health insurance through a variety of state and federal programs
  • Domestic Medical Screening

They also have two main health requirements: 

  • Certify that they have received certain vaccines
  • Certify that they have received screening for tuberculosis (Tb)

Newcomers can complete these certifications in their USCIS online account

Benefits

People who arrive as part of the Uniting for Ukraine program are eligible for certain health benefits. These include:

  • Health insurance: Depending on their immigration status and state of residence, Ukrainian newcomers may be eligible for Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA), or financial assistance to purchase health insurance through the marketplace (“Obamacare”).   • Domestic Medical Screening: Newcomers may be eligible for a domestic medical screening at no cost to them. The screening supports resettlement by identifying health conditions that threaten their well-being, providing vaccinations required for school and work, and referring them to primary care providers or specialists for ongoing health care.

Tuberculosis Screening

Within 90 days of arriving to the United States, Ukrainian newcomers will need to certify that they have received a tuberculosis screening and it is:

  • Negative
  • Indeterminate and they intend to follow up with a doctor
  • Positive and they intend to follow up with a doctor

The screening must be an Interferon-Gamma Release Assays (IGRA) test; skin tests are not accepted. Newcomers can receive this screening at any qualified laboratory or health department.

Vaccine Icon

Vaccines

Before traveling to the United States, Ukrainian newcomers will need to certify that they have either received vaccines that prevent these illnesses, or that they qualify for an exception.

  • Measles
  • Polio
  • COVID-19

After arriving in the United States, newcomers who qualified for an exception will have an opportunity to certify that they have received polio or COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. They can receive these vaccines from any licensed physician or health department.
